Those Wonderful Toys


“Imax creates a much larger-than-life image, and the clarity of the image draws me into the movie,” said Christopher Nolan, who noted that 3-D “actually shrinks the image.”

“I like to see Batman larger than life on an enormous screen,” he said.

Maybe that's why I'm spending top dollar to watch this baby at a really far off theatre.




Yes, The Dark Knight Rises releases tomorrow and yes it has Bane and Catwoman. But why watch in IMAX?

The movie has more than an hour (compared to 28 minutes in The Dark Knight), including some of the biggest battle shot suing large-format Imax cameras and high-resolution 15 perf/65-mm film for maximum clarity and depth. The crew spent nearly 6 months working with Panavision and Imax to retool the viewfinder on the cameras and craft new lenses, which allowed them to shoot in very low-light conditions.
Why wasn't the whole 165 minutes shot in IMAX? Because of the considerable noise made by IMAX cameras, 35mm and 70mm cameras had to be used for shooting the film's dialogue scenes, as dialogue had to be dubbed when shot with IMAX cameras.

It's easy to see here what all this fuss is about. The IMAX reel being considerably bigger has more content to offer as compared to a standard reel.

In order to use more of the image area, IMAX film does not include an embedded soundtrack. Instead, a separate six-channel 35mm magnetic film runs in synchronisation with the main film.

Hence IMAX offers more eye-candy than conventional theatres.

In a world in which everyone is jumping ship to 3D, Nolan is perhaps the only notable director who continues to endow his films in IMAX. This just might be IMAX's last hurrah so it'll be a shame to give up the "IMAX experience" for your local theatre.
