iPhone 5 Rumour Round-up

iPhone, the most successful phone history has ever seen and the eyes of the beholder, a properly cool phone.  Every year we get to see a new one, some change everything (iPhone 4) others don't (iPhone 4S) and looks like we could expect real 'change' this year.

Firstly these are just rumours. Some more plausible than the others but all are reports nonetheless. So that's where my highly sophisticated Plausibility Index comes in. I'm gonna rate each rumour 1-10 with 1 being outrageous and 10 being almost certain. Also new rumours/leaks keep popping up all the time so you can expect this post to update itself...

Ever since the launch of the original iPhone, Apple has stuck to 3.5" to avoid fragmentation thus helping developers design apps for a common screen size. Now though Apple is moving up to a 4" screen because let's face it 3.5" seems a tad too small. The width of the screen will be kept constant and the length will gain 0.53".

Since the screen size is changing the resolution has to change too. The iPhone 5 will have a resolution of  1136×640 as compared to the 960×640 pixels of the iPhone 4/4S. The screen now has an aspect ration of 16:9 which is perfect for viewing videos. Also in portrait mode a longer screen makes reading more pleasurable.

Look familiar? Yes the purported iPhone 5 body is eerily similar to the body of the 4/4S. Disappointingly several sources point towards this body however I would take this with a grain of salt. I think that Apple is just trolling us and they have something spectacular in the works. Hold that breath...

iPhones have never been know for their bulk and they never will. As a statement of intent Apple plans to make the iPhone 5 the thinnest iPhone yet with a thickness of just 7.6mm, 18% thinner than the 9.3mm thick iPhone 4S. Even with improved hardware, battery life and bulky 4G LTE Apple still knows how to make stuff slim so I'm pretty optimistic about this one.

The iPhone 4S faced a lot of heat for not having 4G LTE. At the time 4G radios were bulky and battery-killers. Apple was probably waiting for technology to mature so that they can roll out smaller and more efficient 4G radios into their devices. The new iPad got 4G and iPhone 5 is set to follow.

A larger screen + 4G LTE demand some serious battery power hence the iPhone 5 is expected to have a larger 1440mAh larger 3.8V battery pack to run all that awesome tech. The battery is also expected to be slimmer and longer to meet the body profile. One can never be too certain about the battery specifics but one is sure that the battery will pack a punch.

To achieve a slim profile Apple is shrinking all internal components. The SIM has not been spared so the iPhone 5 is expected to ditch micro-SIM form factor in favour of the smaller nano-SIM. Nano-SIM isn't mainstream by any means and it doesn't save a whole lot of space either so I'm a bit sceptical about this one.

The traditional 19-pin connector has been there for some time and it's outdated by now. Half of the pins in the connector don't have any function thus compelling Apple to bring forth an 8-pin connector. The new connector should work as well, if not better, than the previous one and will save lots of precious space on board the iPhone 5. The 19-pin connector has been here for more than a decade so I'm not entirely convinced if Apple can simply ditch it. Time will tell...

iWallet, Apple's long rumoured NFC payment solution. Is it time? I doubt. For this Apple will have to get several banks on board and I'm not sure if they're there yet. Mobile payment is a big deal and it would be silly to roll out an unfinished product. Apple would rather wait and get all banking partners on board. Maybe they already have...

Lots of chatter going around that the iPhone 5 will be announced on September 12th following a 21st September release. Warming up to the iPhone 5, interest in the iPhone 4S is rapidly declining as people wait for the next iteration. Sales are dry hence it would be unwise for Apple not to launch at the earliest. Stay poised...

With the requirement of greater power comes greater power itself. Ignoring that lame opener it's probable that the iPhone 5 will have an A6 processor. The bulky and power-consuming A5X is unlikely to work well on a phone. The new baby will be clocked higher than the A4 and might have better graphics capabilities too. Again I'm uncertain about what they'll name the thing.

iPod Touch, essentially an iPhone without the phone port, is believed to be unveiled along with the iPhone 5. This refresh is rumoured to have a 4" screen just like daddy. Sure it's common sense to just give the iPod Touch whatever the iPhone has since it's essentially and iPhone without the phone but I wouldn't be so sure. Apple might want to stick on a smaller screen size. I'm pretty certain that there's an iPod Touch refresh but will it have a 4" screen? Time will tell...

Well the world (including this very post) has decided to christen Apple's latest and greatest as the iPhone 5. Other probable names could be iPhone 4G, iPhone 4GS, iPhone LTE, iPhone 6. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it's gonna be called The New iPhone. Sounds cleaner doesn't it?

Never mind the facelift... Never mind radios or spec bumps... The iPhone 5 could come with a different pair of earphones. Apple earphones have always been amazing be it the superb sound quality or the convienece of the buttons with which one can operate basic phone functions, but it's not clear how (or if) the new earphones will improve upon them. Well at least they look pretty cool!
